Differences in pressure result in movement.

The faster a stream of air flows, the lower the surrounding pressure drops. An object moving in the direction of the arrow in the diagram divides the air into an upper and lower stream at the front of the wing.

The air converges together behind the wing. Since it takes both streams the same amount of time to flow over either side of the wing, it follows that the upper stream flows faster than the lower stream, given that it has to travel the longer distance.

This difference in speed creates a pressure differential. The same physical property which makes objects move from high to low pressure areas makes the wing move up.

This aerodynamic design is also employed in aircraft wings to create lift and in racing car foils for the opposite effect which holds the car onto the road's surface.


The propelling power of the fin comes from a pressure differential, not a repulsive force.


Traditional fins only use repulsive force to create propulsion. To create strong propulsion, maximum effort is required which results in muscle fatigue. Further reducing efficiency, the body slides left and right in reaction to kicking.

The XPERT ZOOM's split blade uses the the split to create propulsion (lift) by generating a pressure differential above and below the blade.

All types of divers from professionals to seniors can propel with a light kicking effort. Instead of using the traditional straight-leg kick, the bent knee kick is used which produces the best performance from this fin with the least amount of effort.
